I suggest you reformat the hard drive. Save all the files you want to keep elsewhere. Get out your recovery and device driver discs as you will need them and go from there.
Once redone, update your Windows software with all the updates and reload the software you want.
Plan on taking 2 - 3 hours to do this. Manually trying to remove stuff will take more time than this.
Finally if the hard drive is over 2 years old, you may want to replace the drive. You would hate to have the reformatted drive die 6 weeks from now and have to redo the whole process again then.

just select all the files you want to delete and right click and hit delete. Then go to the desktop and right click : Empty recycle bin. And yes your computer should work faster as the hard drive has to run through less space of useless data.

just delete them normaly and nope that won't make your pc faster what you need to have a faster pc is RAM what could make your computer faster is uninstalling some files that allways run at the start up "uninstalling not deleting"
or you could do this: go to start then press on run then write: msconfig, then go to the last tab and un-chek all the applications that you dont need so your computer will run faster, if you uncheck a application it wont be deleted but it will stop it from running at the start up :P

Just right click and click "Delete," on anything you wanna delete then go to your Recycle Bin and empty that. You won't see a lot of performance gain at all as the hard drive doesn't have very much to do with how fast your processor can do what it does...
