It was the original address of the Metropolitan police force. The name became so synonymous with the "Met" so, when they moved HQ it was named "New Scotland Yard".

These two stories were said to be associated with the origin of the name:
It is said the location had been the site of a residence owned by the Kings of Scotland before the Union and used and occupied by them and/or their ambassadors when in London, and known as '"Scotland". The courtyard was later used by Sir Christopher Wren and known as "Scotland Yard".
Number 4 Whitehall Place backed onto a court called Great Scotland Yard, one of three streets incorporating the words "Scotland Yard" in its name. The street names are said to have derived from the land being owned by a man called Scott during the Middle Ages.

New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of Greater London's Metropolitan Police Service, is called that because the headquarters used to be on a street called Great Scotland Yard, and they didn't change the name when the facility was moved.

Scotland yard is called Scotland Yard as it is situated in the area where Scottish people used to arrive and congregate when they came from Scotland to London back in the day.... It was known as Scotland yard long before the Metropolitan police even exisited..the police headquarters were then named after this well known area that Scottish people arrived in back in the day....its New Scotland yard as they have obviously put up a new headquarters since..stagecoaches bound for Scotland from London also used to depart from this area in the 16 and 1700s.
