A thesis statement is the main idea of the essay. What is your paper about? That would be the main point of the essay.

Assuming your 5 paragraphs are 1. opening, 2-4 your points, and 5. closing, your thesis sentence should state your 3 points in the order you are going to discuss them. Don't just say, "I'm going to talk about these three things" though; something more along the lines of, "Using characterization, mood, and voice, the author progresses the plot...blah blah blah." The thesis is basically a mini-outline that tells what you plan to prove. You would reword your thesis for the opening of your closing paragraph as well.

A thesis statement is like a hypothesis in a science experiment. It is a statement of what you believe about your topic [NOT a statement of what your topic is or what you are going to write about] and thus what it is you hope to convince your reader of. Here is the way I explain to my students the difference between topic and thesis. The topic of a beer commercial is the particular beer, say Budweiser. The thesis is what they want you to believe, e.g. if you drink Bud you will go to parties and have lots of friends. A thesis statement must be a statement of opinion, not a statement of fact.

Good luck

A thesis statement:

tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.

is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.

directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself.

a thesis statement in an essay is a sentence that explicity identifies the purpose of the paper or previews the main ideas, it tells your reader what the essay is going to be about.

A thesis statement can be compared to the opening arguments of a lawyer at a jury trial. It expresses, in a very concise manner, sums up, really, what you're about to say, just as a lawyer tells the jury what he/she is going to prove.

The thesis statement, or topic sentence, clearly lays out what your paper will discuss.

This is a statement in your opening paragraph which explains the main thrust of your argument. Your body paragraphs (all three of them) must support this argument and your conclusion will "wrap it up."

It is where you set out the central idea of your essay. You then go on to prove and expand.
