I'm taking my family on a vacation to San Diego in two weeks. Where can I take them to go mining? We used to have a diamond mine in New York and my family LOVED it so I would like to take them mining again... Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks ♥

Anza Borrego has alot of mines and mine shafts that are open to explore, I will not recomend going out there this time of year, due to the 100+ degree weather out there right now. Besides that I dont think there is anywhere else you can do that.

There use to be good mining for pink tourmaline but I don't think as an out-of-towner with little contacts in the area you could do this as a day trip. Here's some info: http://www.palagems.com/california_gem_mining.htm

You might also want to talk to someone from the San Diego Mineral and Gem Society as they'd be able to give you more detailed information. http://www.sdmg.org/

The other poster is right though. Given the time of year it's really hot where most of the local mining is so maybe you can check out local mineral and gem exhibits at the San Diego Natural History Museum and go to other fun things.

Not quite that kinda place. Take them to the beach instead and have them "mine" for seashells. Lots of beach and lots of shells.
