BREAKING NEWS - Just moments ago, Senate Republicans succeeded in a filibuster in which they refused to end debate on Virginia Democrat Jim Webb's S. 2012, which would have placed strict limits on National Guard and reserve deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as mandating more downtime at home before active-duty combat troops are returned to battle.

The vote was 56-41 to end debate, with 60 votes needed to move to a full, up-or-down vote on the Webb measure. Once again, the GOP has been successful at destroying another Democratic attempt at helping service members and their families caught in the buzzsaw of the Bush administration's lies and incompetence.

Yes. And what does mocking Bush's service (AWOL etc.) have to do with the Republican's Actions? And Andy G thanks for showing your total ignorance of the way the Senate works, no party "controls the senate" with a dubious one vote majority -- 60 votes are required to end debate and bring a bill to the floor for a vote. What lame responses!

I think theres proof in many places.

there are 3 plane loads of wounded dropped off daily at just one base in Germany. The wounded injuries include burns among the worst 3rd and 4th degree (that means the bones were burned) over 80% of the body. The USA focuses entirely too much on total deaths. The severely injured are so many and their individual lives are just blurbs. I think a good documentary would explore just a few of these cases.

Like the non-executive employees of their corporations, the troops are just cattle to them.

The GOP was even against a .5% (.005 or one-half of one percent) raise for the troops.

Also, reduced funding for the VA.

Powerful Republicans care about one thing : MONEY.

Yes, it began with the lack of body armor, and it continues. The Democrats' riders to supplemental appropriations bill in April included an increase in the housing allowance for the active duty military and an increase in veterans' benefits. Republicans called these appropriations "pork".

As I have said before the republicans give lip service, when it comes to real action they side with bush and his policy every time. When it really matters they slip back to their old partisan ways.

yes, i heard about this.

the republican position can be summarized as follows:

they are not in favor of our troops being properly rested.

one can only wonder how long any part of the american public will continue to regard them as strong on defense and good for the military.

and to those who whine about how the repubs continue to draw fire for this kind of thing AFTER they lost their majorities - they need to remember that it was a repub FILIBUSTER that resulted in this most recent shortchaning of the troops.

when the repubs lost their majorities, they pulled trent lott out of the wings (previously disgraced) because he was a good obstructionist.

imagine that...

It's a bogus claim from either side. It is, essentially, dishonest.
