On the field, no. In the front office, no. In the back office ... probably not there either.
Sometimes it seems like no big contracts make sense, because young players are so much cheaper. But good younger players are hard to come by, so sometimes you have to spend.
That said, $100 million for Ichiro doesn't make sense. He's an immensely talented hitter, but he's never been much of a slugger, and his speed is very likely to diminish over the next five years. He'll still be fast, but he'll look more and more like Kenny Lofton at age 40 rather than Kenny Lofton at age 25 -- both in the outfield and trying to beat out all those infield singles.
Only two position players have ever made a $20 million salary, and both of them were under 28 years old when they signed their contracts. Ichiro is not a $20 million man, and he's going to be even less of one in a few years.
The Mariners may see this as a way to keep faith with their fans, but fans respect winning over all else, and this is not a winning move. I think the Mariners are essentially "buying a statue" -- a permanent iconic figure in the history of the team -- to put next to Griffey's. I think they were overly moved by Griffey's recent visit to Seattle.
The only way this move can be justified is based on Ichiro's following in Japan. But since all international broadcast revenues are split evenly among the 30 teams, that argument is weak. Japan has a big population, but it takes a whole lot of Mariners merchandise to add up to $100 million.

this is an excellent question! i'm a Mariners fan and your factors are very genuine. Ichiro brings in Asian followers and additionally merely human beings in Washington to work out him. he's rather thrilling and a solid guy. yet ought to he be the optimal paid participant in all of expert baseball? i do no longer think of so, I comprehend the place you're coming from, yet Ichiro rather isn't a thoroughly finished participant. you additionally can argue that there is different gamers that generate extra money than Ichiro inclusive of a Derek Jeter or Albert Pujols or gamers like that? this is an excellent question and perchance Ichiro ought to be paid extra in accordance on your element yet possibly no longer the optimal settlement in professional baseball.

Everyone and there mother knew A-rod was going to get more that 5yrs 100million dollars. I have no idea why they got rid of Randy Johnson, maybe it had something to do with the fact that he only won 20 games once with the M's. No way does Ichiro sign with the Yankees. They need to start scaling back their payroll not add to it. Oh and Sexton is a joke, he should have never left Miliwaukee.

Ichiro makes at least that much for seattle and is worth it. Pay Rod chose to leave the Mariners (wanted to go to a team with a better chance at the world series - or that was his story to the press ) and Randy was traded due to age, decreaing ablity and injury problems. As for Ichiro going to the Yanks GOD I HOPE NOT maybe the Bo Sox, but not the Yanks

They traded Johnson. They'd be crazy to not resign Ichiro.

They offered A-Rod 120 million for six years seven years ago. so this would be a better investment. not much difference from those two offers. they also make tons of money in safeco.

To be honest they probably just FINALLY realized that to have the best you need to put out some money. Too bad they didn't realize it when they had one of the best players in baseball
