Avalon is very nice.
People of all ages enjoy the jersey shore. While you might prefer bars/clubs, others might enjoy restaurants, others might enjoy rides by the boardwalk.
Avalon is close enough to other areas that you can find nearly anything you are looking for close by.
Depending upon what you want to do, you might choose a different place.
Big party-towns tend to be Pt. Pleasant and Seaside. But close to those, Manasquan and Ortley Beach are a bit quieter but still have some partying going on.
Another good option would be Long Beach Island.
