a dam is a home for beavers. A home is a thing and a place because they are both nouns. A home is a place, and a place is a thing. good question. i had to think there for a minute. =)

A dam is a barrier across flowing water that obstructs, directs or slows down the flow, often creating a reservoir, lake or impoundment. In Australian and South African English, the word "dam" can also refer to the reservoir as well as the structure. Most dams have a section called a spillway or weir over which, or through which, water flows, either intermittently or continuously.
Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as levees and dikes are used to prevent water flow into specific land regions.

A dam is a thing. It is like any other constructed building, just an object.
A dam is located in a location. Some of the locations are prominent and famous because for hydrological reasons the locations are very dramatic.
If we are all very lucky, most dams stay in the locations in which they are originally built.
