The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela. It's about a group of men fighting in the Mexican Revolution.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is great also.

I just got through reading Twilight Eyes by Dean Koontz. If you like fiction I suggest it.
Its a scary thriller.

For something sad but inspiring at the same time I suggest, "First They Killed My Father." It talks about the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, really sad, but a really good! You won't be able to put the book down!

omg please pick up a copy of fear and loathing in las vegas.
the book is way better than the movie (starring johnny depp and benicio del toro)
a clockwork orange (you'll have plenty of time to translate the british sayings, lol)
woody allen novels are great if you like dry humor.
ray bradbury is good if you like sci-fi twilight zoney stuff too
