You're point is very valid about protesting the freedoms that allow you to burn the symbol of them.
Too often citizens will rally around their freedom of speech (which has been extended to freedom of expression) and other freedoms with out paying attention to their responsibilities, such as voting, obeying the law, acting in a responsible manner. While you *can* exercise your freedom of expression, you need to do so responsibly.

Burning the flag does not mean you are protesting the government. Most Americans have some kind of problem with at least part of the government. Flag burning does not adequately or accurately display this protest. What flag burning does say is that you dislike or hate the USA. If that is the case, you should not be in the USA. Who goes to a baseball game to sit around complaining about how much they hate baseball? Who goes to a restaurant that serves food they dislike and then proceeds to complain about not liking the food? Only an idiot would do these things. Same goes for flag burning. If you do not like America, that is fine, but you also need to leave. If you choose to stay within the U.S. and publicly protest your hate for the U.S., you should be removed immediately.
Why? Because people in the USA who hate the USA are a direct threat to the American people. They are terrorists waiting to happen. True, they may never become terrorists or participate in any illegal violent acts. But how are we supposed to be able to differentiate between people who hate the USA and will cause problems and the people who hate the USA but will not cause problems? We cannot. The best we can do is remove them from society. And why not? They don't want to be here anyway. This way everyone wins.

if you got the same treatment for burning the flag that Don Imus got for his comments, we wouldnt need a law against flag burning. The backlash would take care of it.

Yes it should be a crime. I served this country(USN) and it totally pisses me off to think of those who died defending the very freedom you practice by burning the flag. I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but enough is enough. If you hate this country enough to burn its flag, then its time for you to get the f$ck out.

No it should not be a crime unless you are burning the flag that is not yours--otherwise that would be unlawful destruction of another's property.

yes, beacause burning the flag is considered a hate crime.
thousands of soldiers risked/lost their lives trying to give us all a better life, and that's how people want to repay them? by burning their own flag? is this a joke?
if they really hate the country so damn much, they can freaking leave.
