The easiest way to do it is with Microsofts back up software that come with windows. in Windows XP click on start > all programs > Accessories > system tools > backup. This will open the Microsoft Back up wizard. There are saveral way you can make a backup. you can do so onto an external hard drive or a cd or dvd. Now that you are in MS Backup Utility click on backup wizard (advanced) > next. You now have three options: Everything, Select file, or just system state. It would probably be best to do Everything to start out, but Iif you know what file you want to backup you can select the second option. (Note: when you do selected files, be sure that you check system states as this will be very important to put things back the way they were.) After you have selected Everything, tell where you want the backup store whether on a cd or DVD or external hard drive. Then name the back up. Include the computer name and date. Click next > finished. The Backup will then start. When it is finished store the disc in a safe place. (Note: make sure the cd or DVD is blank when you first insert it before the back up.)
The Microsoft Backup software is better than just copying to a external drive because it has the ability to restore the files to their original state from the back. The restore process if your computer crashes is so much easier with MS backup utility. And it is better that puchased software because it comes with windows and does not require any extra installation before restore.

get backup software
get a place to put your backup data (dvd/external drive/cd/etc)
run backup software
select the files/folders you want to backup - copying all your files is a waste of time. Many won't back up because they're in use and you wouldn't even restore them if you needed to use your backup.

there are loads of "back up" programs and software around, free and paid for,and also plenty of inepensive hardware to assist you in backing up your data
the easiest way to back up your laptop data is to buy a external hard drive, these are quite cheap these days you can buy a 120gb drive for around £60 and then using a usb2.0 connection connect it to a spare usb port and then use a appropriate back up software such as GRBackPro
(http://www.grsoftware.net/backup/software/grbackpro.html),then using this and selecting your external drive as the location for your back-ups ,the jobs done!
good luck mate!

I find using a USB pen drive really great because you can use them in virtually any computer and they are so compact and small. then i usually save as my work at school after opening the file and then do the same when i take it hope because if the pen drive accidentally gets pulled out i have a spare copy. They're just great.
