The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, by Edward Fitzgerald
...the most widely read poem in the English language, 75 stanzas and illustrated wonderfully...with lines like:
"Here with a loaf beneath the bough
A jug of wine, a book of verse and thou
Beside me singing in the wilderness
And wilderness is paradise enow"
Easy to read, each stranza stands on its own, and very, very romantic without being "girly"

The Little Prince
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
The Velveteen Rabbit
I must admit, the first was written by a French man but it is lovely, even in English.

Get him "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" that way he can understand something that's a great phenomena international extensive. Is contemporary .... (such as you purchase it in one day!) and, if he likes it, he can study the 6 books previous to it.

Nietzsche - complete works... if he reads it and still forgives you for giving it to him, you have found a real pearl...
I value TD's opinions immensely, but I would stay clear of "Three Men and a Goat", not really a good read for an 18-year old...
Also, "Moby Dick" - a sordid tale of a man afflicted with sexually trasmitted disease... not good... "Old Man Can't See", kind of predictable and boring but harmless...rest of his recommendations are appropriate...
