The classic moment that Potter may be considered a "nerd" movie is when Jimmy Kimmel's show was doing a remote from a Potter showing and a boy was dressed as him (Potter). Kimmel went on to say to the kid "I think it's time your start taking up football" implying he just lost all his street cred amongst his friends.

After a bit of thought, this one is easy. The time period, when Star Trek and Star Wars were created, was a time when only the nerdiest of people took to them passionately. Society has become a lot more understanding of what constitutes a nerd. The Harry Potter phenomenon is also global. It is not just an American cult classic. There are Star Wars and Star Trek junkies all over the world now, but when both entities were first introduced to the world, there wasn't as much exposure available for them like there is now. I don't feel Harry Potter is a nerdy franchise. The books are a great read and the movies are somewhat entertaining. JK Rowling has bridged the gap between older and younger people everywhere. Anyone can sit down with one of the books and enjoy the whole experience. Star Wars and Star Trek are not always appealing to both sexes nor people of all ages. I like all of the above franchises, but I came to grips with my nerdiness many years ago!

I don't see either Star Trek or Harry Potter as "Nerd" movies. Both franchises challenge one's intellectuallity and imagination. Harry Potter has been amazingly successful because it converts the fantasies of children and adults to a bit of reality we can all share and enjoy. We all want to believe in Magic.

Star Trek makes us look at the future and how we might make things work for the betterment of Humankind. With 10 movies (Star Trek XI to be released on 12-25-2008), 5 TV Series, an animated series, and billions of dollars in merchandise, it certainly has demonstrated a track record of success.

Harry Potter is considered a nerd movie by some people. And STAR WARS is definitely NOT a nerd movie--its a classical that people just become oddly obsessed with.--like Harry.

In that sense, it IS a nerd movie. Maybe the Harry Pott-heads (or whatever you call the fans) dont consider themselves nerds because the Harry Potter franchise isn't Sci-Fi? Hmmm, but it's Fantasy... that can be just as bad...

i think because harry potter relates to magic or supernatural, it's considered a kid flick. with star wars, it's also supernatural because of the force, but it's loaded with high tech hardware, so high tech hardware is associated with techie nerdy stuff. that's why it's called a nerd movie.

You know, that's an interesting question. Even tho it is technically a "nerd" movie, movies involving fantasy to that degree are just considered fantasy, while their science fiction counterparts are...well, deemed nerdy. Fantasy has been given more leeway for some reason.

It IS a nerd movie.

Its just that us nerds have finally figured out we outnumber the cool kids 2 to 1.

We are no longer ashamed of our essential nerdiness...
