I am wondering if I can add a red tint to my water based wood stain by adding a water based paint to it to acheive the exact color & tint I want / need. Will this work and be a good usable product or can't you tint a stain with paint?

Stain goes into the wood and paint goes onto the wood. I do not think adding paint to stain will work. I do know that some wood workers are using Rit dye to tint their projects and then sealing them.

Not familiar w/ water based woodstains, however have used dry pigments that can be added to most stains
Might be safer to find a "redder"stain by the same mfr & blend to the color you want.
Not uncommon to use oil or latex paint & proper solvent to create a color wash but this gives a slightly milky effect.
Artists oil paints can be added to oil based stains to vary tint.
It should follow that (if your stain is acrylic ) acrylic watercolor paint will work.
Mixing acrylic w/ polyurethanes for example will change drying characteristics.

I don't know why this wouldn't work as both stain and paint are water-based. Mix a small amount and use it on a test area. If it works Voila!!! Great If not, you will have to mix a couple of stains to get your desired effect. My best educated guess says that it will work fine. You won't have wasted much time.

It's not a good idea. They make powdered tints to do just that.
