for a graphic design student, would a MacBook be sufficient? (school projects, etc.)

The MacBook would be sufficient. The main differences are the screen size, graphic hardware, backlit keyboard with Ambient Light Sensor, and ExpressCard34 slot.

the macbook pro has a dedicated graphics card, and a macbook does not, it has integrated graphics. an of course, the macbook hasa smaller screen.
