I think they will, but not anytime close. The USA is making strides in futbol, but it's going to take a lot more patience and effort to be a consistent top 10 national team. Does the USA have enough patience? I think that's the important question. Americans want to be champions fairly quickly, and this could take 20+ years. Also remember only 7 national teams have ever won the World Cup since its 1930 birth. Teams like Portugal, Spain, and Mexico have never won. England's won it once when it was held in the UK. And the U.S. has a lousy record when the World Cup is played on European soil (where many World Cups are held).

If the USA ever becomes a viable football power, the central key is MLS. It needs to continue to improve both technically and financially. Bringing in aging superstars like Beckham, Blanco, Angel and Schelotto will help. But the league needs to fight the temptation to depend on non-US players to be competitive or MLS will end up like the defunct NASL.

MLS needs to figure out a way to keep young emerging American players in the USA (like pay and train them better). It seems many of them are lured by the money and training by European teams. But when they get to Europe, they don't get much playing time. One example is Benny Feilhaber who looked good in the Gold Cup and Copa America, but doesn't get much playing time at his Hamburg club. It's okay to go to Europe to play with the best, but let them develop in the USA first before they go off to greener pastures. Look at players like Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey who went to MLS first before going to EPL.

Lastly, MLS and US Soccer needs a better relationship with NCAA college soccer. Whether it's the different rules between FIFA and NCAA soccer, or US Soccer offering financial incentives to college players to go professional (Generation Adidas program)-- there's a rift that needs to be repaired.

Some of these respondents are funny. "Never" is a very long time. I think most people who have any idea about what they're talking about think that the US, China and any other populous nations where soccer is growing in popularity have an excellent chance to win someday. I'm sure the people who say the US will never win are many of the same people who were stunned out of their minds when the US made the final 8 in 2002, and probably would have never given the US U-20 team a chance to beat Brazil in an U-20 World Cup. Still, it may be a long wait. You have to be both lucky and good, and the US squad is still not consistently among the top 10 in the world.

We have the potential to someday win a World Cup. We are getting better and are moving in the right direction. You can't base the question of if we will ever win a World Cup on our performace in Copa America. That was not our regular national team that was competing there. You also can't base it on our poor performance in 2006. We didn't play very well and we more than capable of playing much better than we did. We have improved a lot over the years and we will continue to improve. I think we will win a World Cup someday but we still have quite a bit of work to do before we are really able to be serious contender for winning one. It's just going to take time to develop a team that is fully capable or even possibly capable of winning a World Cup but we are getting there.

With experience, hard work, drive and talent ANY team can win the World Cup.

It's only the really driven, talented teams that win. If the USA can do this then sure why not? But it is unlikely that they will in the next few decades but it WILL happen! Just like Portugal is bound to win and so is Spain!!

it all depends on how competitive the MLS league gets, because soccer has never been popular in the US, but if the league continues growing as it has done so far they might get a contender team in 16 years or so, cause it is a slow process. And specially if the interest for soccer goes down as it happened in the 70's after the Pele boom in US

They already have more chance of winning it than 70% of the countries who have been trying for over 60 years. I would say they could very well win it before England ever do again and certainly would bet on them winning it before the likes of Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Sweden or Mexico....all nations with strong World Cup backgrounds.

The only way for them, or in fact ANY team to have a WC winning squad, is to have a majority of their players playing in the top leagues. Even though MLS is getting better, it really isnt anywhere in the league of the Serie A or the Liga.
Playing in the top leagues improves players, and playing in different leagues adds to different aspects of the teams game. For Eg: a team with players based in Italy, Spain and england will bring flair, technicality as well as pace to their national Team.
With 90% of the US starters based in MLS, they will not grow in the footballing sense required to win a WC.

If the sleeping giant ever wakes up, yes. But currently I believe the US are, at best, considered only a "dark horse". Of course anything can happen in a tournament but the traditional powerhouses make this a difficult task for any potential contender.

they wont.......well at least not any time soon.....not with the current squad after what happened in the America Cup they dont stand a chance........the U.S will most likely have a better chance probably in 2014 because U.S has many talented young players

They can do it. They just need a new coach that knows soccer and
can raise the bar up to the next level
