percentage = (part/whole) * 100

example:
Suppose we have
Column A: number of boys (in class) = 12
Column B: total number of students (in a class) = 100
Column C: percentage of boys in a class

Type in cell A1: 12
type in cell A2: 100
Type in cell A3: the formula
=A1/A2
then click [Check mark]

Cell A3 now displays: .12

to display column A3 as percentage, do the following:
Click in cell A3
Click FOrmat cell
Under the [Number Tab], select percentage
Click [OK] button

cell A3 now displays: 12.00%

You don't calculate percentage. Set the properties (format) of the cell to percentage and it will automatically display as a percent, sign included.

put into your cell:
=x/y*100.
