Gravity wants to pull the Earth into a spherical shape. Mere rock is not strong enough to resist that pull on such a large scale. Rock is strong enough to support mountains a few miles high against gravity, but not strong enough to support an 8,000 mile wide planet in any shape other than a sphere.

A convenient shape would be that of a cube, but then, because our planet would have to yet rotate in order not to burn on one side and freeze on the other, there would be strong winds generated. There still wouldn't be universal heating of its surface either, and there would be strong tides that would keep people for living near large bodies of water. Were it to rotate so that there were a continual four sides of the six presenting themselves to the sun, there would be a build up of water in form of ice on the other two surfaces, and I supposed our planet would become four sides having a vast desert and two where all the water would collect in form of ice. The last of the inhabitants would likely discuss what it would be like if the planet had only been that of some other shape - possibly a sphere.

The reason our planet is "sphere" shaped is due to the heat energy contained within. It is this energy that generates a field of gravity that contracts a mass to the shape of a sphere, that also draws heat energy toward the center of a mass so that a planet is not the same temperature throughout. The equation for this energy is part of the physics trilogy: E = mc2, m = E/c2, and c2 = E/m. It is the last that describes the formation of a field of gravity, or that of a field of physical time. As long as the energy remains within a mass it shall remain spherical. Were there to be no heat energy within a mass, then it could actually form into that of a cube and it would remain that way. But, then, it would have no field of gravity. Personally, it appears to me that God did a very good job in forming our "home" the way He did.

It is a sphere-like, and have very much always thought it was closer to an oval shape than a RIGHT SPHERE...

It also cannot be otherwise...can it?

I mean look at the moon and imagine it with a different shape...So, How do u like it...!!!

Did u know that EARTH was 400 Times Bigger in size than it is nowadays...?!

Ever since it had been reduced in size from edges throughout its age....

Further, LIKE PLANET MARS, Earth will stop turning to the direction it has been going on since creation till now, then it will turn opposite direction for a very limited period of time, and then it will go back to its original turning once again...

This means Sun will rise from the West rather... Don't u think that's awsome...!!

I think this phenomenon is called retrogrition...or so...and astronomists say it has to occure at least once in a planet's life...

All of this wouldn't have happened had it not been a sphere-like in shape...so I like it to remain as it is till we witness what had been told & said about it...

I don't think it will be that far away from now though...

Maybe some 15 to 17 years ahead ...!!

Let's wait & see...

If Earth wasn't rotating, then it would more or less be a perfect sphere - it's the lowest-energy shape possible, where all mass is within a certain distance of the center of mass. If you had an oval, or say a square - then you have points of the mass that have higher potential energy than other places, and any seismic events affecting that planet will allow some of that potential energy to be released.

I wish the Earth was shaped like an ASSteroid.

p.s. The Earth is NOT round. If it were, how could we have Mt. Everest?

Well it sorta is...

Earth is flatter at the poles, and bulges out slightly at the equator - the technical term is an oblate spheroid - like an egg shape although not as pronounced.

I think the Earth should be a stellated dodecahedron...but that's just my opinion...

The ways it is now because then all the places in the world get light. Not equal light but light.

Well it is slightly pancake-pear shaped. Centrifugal forces push it out in the middle a bit, so it isn't the perfect sphere that it would be from minimizing gravitational potential energy.

God wanted it to be round for a reason. His reasons aren't known to us, and His plan is better than anything we could think up.
