a pure democracy is one man, one vote, majority rules and winner take all.
AKA, mob rule
Republic is a representative government where the voters elect their representatives who then pass laws. The representative is limited by the countries constitution and laws. Thus things that are unpopular but needed can be made into law.

I don't know where you went or are going to school but if they did or are doing their job then you would know that the United States is both a republic and a democracy. We are a democratic republic. Pure democracy doesn't work in any entity larger than a small town. There isn't enough space for everyone in the same place to allow everyone his say and for everyone to vote on every issue. Things move slow in the representative democracy we have it would come to a grinding halt under a pure democracy.
While totalitarian government would speed things up the people would have no say in the laws enacted nor in the way things are done.
I believe we are better off with a democratic republic than any other form of government. That democratic republican form of government is now used by many nations around the world because it is practical as a form of government.

Republic hands down, the US is both, if you sign a government document you are admitting that you are a US citizen and therefore subject to federal law, it is always assumed you are a US citizen unless you make it known that you are not one of them (living in a democracy) you live in a republic, it is all contract law, learn the difference between a statute being contract law and a law, they are 2 different things entirely! You will find out some pretty bad things on your quest for knowledge though. If you are charged with a violation of a statute that statute might not apply to you if the government does not have a contract on you admitting you are one of them subject to their statutes/quasi laws. Everyone needs to look this stuff up right now! Ignorance or the law is no excuse! I got out of a felony charge by claiming I had jurisdiction and the charges were baseless and the charges were dropped, after 5 court dates of them trying to make me break or cop a deal, I refused, I was court ordered to have an evaluation, and passed with nothing more than a problem with alleged authority figures! Do not ever sign any document without reserving all your rights, just write all rights reserved on the document near your signature if possible! Any reservation of your rights is sufficient though!

A democracy is rule by the majority leading to inequality for the minorities. A republic is rule by law which gives everyone equality by law. A true democracy leads to chaos. A republic is much, much better.

-The popular vote would decide the winners, and
-Washington DC would have reps in congress for starters.
-The government would not get into people's private lives,
it would have low taxes and no wasteful spending,
it would value the constitution more than tyranny of an ignorant majority, if a court finds that a minority is being unfairly excluded from rights.
-It would spend revenues wisely, for the national good. It would conduct the war on terror with intelligence, and no more "friendly fire," just pinpoint accuracy in getting rid of the worst of the worst.
-We'd have a more preventative medical system paid for by taxes, instead of overburdening emergency rooms.. So many people go to the e.r. for a child's fever when a nurse or medical school students could check things out more cheaply.
-Hopefully, we'd restore our friends' confidence again and realize that we don't live in the world alone.
-We'd find ways to pay for our needs as a nation without overtaxing the people for working and earning money.
Like even higher taxes on cigs, gas guzzing new cars, diamonds, gold, Chinese imports (!!!), alcohol, maryjane, furs, etc.
-We'd quickly find a way to become self reliant with our own sources of energy (Look at Brasil!) and not let oil companies run the govt.
And we'd feel as free as Western Europeans do. Ask them! They all say they feel freer over there.
Our taxies might go up a little, but you wouldn't have to pay $400 or more per month to insure your family. You'd have major medical coverage from, let's say $100 a month.
-Reactionaries that scream "that's socialism" So FLIPPING
what! That's not Soviet style Socialism! It's just one step towards preventing crises in the USA before they happen.
Then it will save $ in the end because people wouldn't wait until they're desperate to go to a doctor or dentist.
These fearmongers against national healthcare think like this:
"If A, then Z.!!! So watch out!!!"
"Right."
"Right"
"Right"
(R)
Dems wouldn't take away people's options to have their own private insurance and go to their snooty doctors that only accept those with private insurance. (Not all MD's, of course)
Scare tactics to keep people from having access to affordable health care, and why?? There are big $$$ interests at hand, like stockholders in a private insurance company. Do they want you well more than to see the insurance co.'s profits go up? Do lawyers want you well more than they want to represent you in a lawsuit?
Do banks want you well or would they rather foreclose on your house?
-National Healthcare would also help businesses that do pay for their employees' health care. The businesses wouldn't have to pay as much in a less profit driven system.
I know some rads out there think I think we should suddenly become Cuba. See how they think!?? I don't mean that at all, but I'd like to see something that is a hybrid system, a bit like Canada's but you'll still have private options and won't have to wait all day if you've got big bucks. You know this.
You also know that we could do it all more cheaply by focusing on prevention and using nurses, med. assistants, and med. students more often.

I suppose in a true democracy everyone would participate in government, not just elect representatives to do it for them. I don't see how it would work in reality, though.

I guess the simple answer is where political leaders are elected by universal suffrage and the election process is fair and open to independent scrutiny.
There's an international organisation that scrutinises elections to see whether they are fair and not corrupt. Strangely, the US has always resisted having its elections scrutinised, even though it has got the organisation to check out the system in other countries.
