they said Victor Martinez's home run was the first pinch hit home run since Hank Blalock's off Eric Gagne in 2003

THen what was Carl Crawford's home run then? Is it not a pinch hit home run?

Wasn't he pinch hitting for someone???

Pinch hit in the all-star game means hitting for a pitcher or subbing in the offensive half of an inning for a team. I believe that Crawford was a field sub and not a bat sub when he first came in the game.

I think you are incorrect. He replaced left fielder Magglio Ordonez, well according to the box score. I think that Crawford doesn't count as a pinch hitter, though, because he stayed in and played outfield. Victor Martinez came in for a pitcher, and blasted one then sat back on the bench. He didn't stay in and play catcher. That could be why they said that. But, announcers do make mistakes, they are humans too.

I typed in "Vlad wins home run derby" in the search the web box (in Yahoo Answers box) and found some entries. Unfortunately, I do not have Tony LaRussa's e-mail. If an old schoolchum finds me, I will ask her if she knows.
