When i was a girl roughly 20 years ago I used to stare at the sun (i had no idea) and it didn't hurt, but now I can't as it's too bright. Has the sun got brighter/stronger?

Well, the simple answer is yes, it's brighter than it was (it's gotten brighter (on average) for the past 170 years) - but the answer to your question is that your eyes have gotten more sensitive. (and you've grown wiser...)
A teacher told a friend of mine (who also used to stare at the sun), "You know how you start a fire with a magnifying glass lense? That's what the lense in your eye is doing to your retina..."
So... don't stare at the sun.

No, the brightness of the Sun has been measured carefully by astronomers for more than 20 years and it has not changed.
Staring at the Sun was always dangerous. You must be remembering staring at it near sunset or sunrise on a day that was less than crystal clear. In such cases, haze near the horizon can act as a filter to block most of the light from the Sun and make it possible to look directly at it without hurting your eyes. It will also look red in such cases.

The sun appears brighter because much of our Ozone is gone. The Ozone absorbs radiation, creating a dimmer perception of the sun. With less Ozone, more radiation transmits. This is also why we get sunburned faster nowadays than in yesteryear.

No it hasn't gotten brighter but the more you look at it the more it will start to hurt and you're eye's are weaker when you are older i don't suggest looking at the sun as you might go blind.

I'm surprised you haven't damaged your eyes. The sun hasn't changed that much in 20 years, your eyes have grown more sensitive to bright light. For what reasons, I could only begin to guess.

Short answer, no, it hasn't in any obvious perceptible way. It is pretty much the same for the last couple bilion years, and will remain so for a few billion more.

yes it has gotten brighter...and your eyes have gotten weaker...the sun will actually be so bright that it will make the earth inhospitable for humans in 500,000,000 years...but we won't be around then so I wouldn't worry too much
