Riviera Maya, hands down. It offers a wide selection of things to do and see, and has many great places to stay at. Besides, if you want to go to Cozumel, it is only a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen.
Some of the beach houses there are great as well. I highly recommend checking out the site of iloveakumal.com, which is the website of one of the houses on the Riviera Maya.

I'd say Riviera Maya--you have more options:
Spend time snorkeling at Xelha
Ride an inner tube down an underground river at Xcaret
Visit the ruins at Tulum and Coba
and if you're interested in Cozumel, you can take the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel for a day trip

Riveira Maya or Cozumel you can't go wrong. If I had to choose I would go to RM only because the resorts there are newer and spectacular.
