Several hours after a partial water change, I noticed eggs sitting on a leaf. How do I know if they're fertilized or not? Should I transfer the stalk to a 2 gallon tank so that the adult fish don't eat them? My largest danio (I'm uncertain as to whether it's male or female) just died; its fins were battered and torn. Is this related to the breeding?

Danios are eggs scatterers so it's possible the eggs are from a danio, but the eggs are not particularly sticky, so I would expect them to fall off a leaf in the water currents. The eggs would be small, totally separate from each other and clear. If they are not fertilized they will turn white within a few hours to a day. A single Danio can lay many eggs, but since they are avid egg eaters most will have been eaten.

How long have you had the plant? Is it possible these are eggs from a snail or from some other fish in the tank?

The condition of the danio that died could have been from breeding as they do chase and nip as they spawn, but it's very rarely fatal to any of the fish involved.

your large danio very possibly was in a fight, perhaps over a female. or he died of fin rot. you should try transferring the eggs to the 2 gal. tank, just incase they are fertile. in a few days, check back on the eggs; if you see a tiny black thing inside, then the eggs are fertile. if not, then they might not be fertile. female fish dont usually lay eggs without having them fertilized, but it is possible that while spawning, she layed the eggs and her mate died or was killed before he could contribute. well, if the eggs are fertile, good luck with the fry! =]

No, they're created from painfully placing the fish in an acid therapy that takes to the air the protecting coat on the fish, and then places them right into a dye. it rather is like getting an all-over tattoo at as quickly as. Thats additionally why they in many situations die so rather.
