when was the last time you changed your oil or checked it? If the oil level is ok and the knocking is extremely bad it can't be a good sign.

"Yes" it can be an oil problem, it can either be low and or you may need to change it, though depending on your mileage your valves may be sticking and or loose. Before taking the vehicle in for inspection try this, Fill your fuel tank to the rim with the 91 high octane fuel, this may help for the reason that the lower octane will make your engine ping. I have heard of transmissions knocking also but dont know very much about that. Good Luck!

First, check what octane rating the owner's manual calls for.

If you are using the correct fuel, go one category up, like 87 to 89, and see if that fixes it.

If this fixes it, try going back to the normal fuel after three tanks of the higher octane. If the noise doesn't come back, then running it hotter cleaned out something. If it comes back, then either keep running higher octane or take it back to the dealer or somebody who can put it on a diagnostic machine.

Take your car back to a service Center and get a tune up and also check what "octane rating" you are using. You may need a higher gas than regular 87.
