Well part of it has to do with the feminist movement.....women are now in the position to do more things. They CAN go to work and drive a car and not be stay-at-home moms without being labeled loose. However, I don't think that this always leads to families falling apart...i think it makes them stronger. Moms can now lend their experience to raising their children.....it makes them a better mom. I have seen countless examples of this happening, across all social and economic classes......so there you go.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. Are you saying that women no longer sacrifice for their families and are more focused on career? If that is the case, I think you are completely mistaken. I grew up in a household where my parents both worked full time....being a stay at home mom was not an option for my mother due to cost of living. Working full time WAS a sacrifice for her. She missed out on some really special moments with my sister and I in order to help put food on the table. Today, living is much more expensive, and with the divorce rates, most women have no choice but to work. Think of it this way: If a stay-at-home mom is dependant on her husband and the marriage ends, what will she do to support herself and her children without any work experience? As far as I'm concerned, women today are sacrificing more than ever!

The main reason is simply because things are different nowadays. The cost of living is higher, women have the same opportunities as men, a lot of women are single parents, the attitudes of women have changed, etc. Many women entertain the idea of having their own careers with their own money. Being successful is the American dream and many women like myself, have career goals and want to achieve them.
However, that does not mean that women can't still care for their families. We now have the luxuries of after school care, Head Start programs, summer camps, and babysitters, all of which assist us in making sure our children are well taken care of and allow us the ability to maintain a good working lifestyle. Careers does not take away from family time, we can always find time for our families. We just want the opportunity to do what we want to do besides being limited to just being a stay-at-home mom.
You always have to find some kind of balance in your life. Juggling a career and family is just on of those things you have to balance and there is nothing wrong with that.

Because in this high pressure society we live in now, a woman needs to work too just so a couple can get by. Also, no young girl wants to hang around grandma learning the things from her, when she can be out partying, or playing on the computer etc etc. Why learn to cook the old fashioned way, when it's so easy to pop something in the micro wave, or order fast food? Why learn to sew, when clothing stores are on every block? no one needs to patch hand me down clothes anymore.

It's so much harder to get by on just one income these days therefore many wives/moms are working instead of being able to stay at home and take care of the family. Don't get me wrong, as they are still taking care of their family, but in a different way.

Women had fewer choices then. It was a lifestyle very similar to slavery and without reward or appreciation. They didn't get respect or honor. They had no rights under the law - it wasn't against the law for husbands to rape them and take ownership of all their property upon marriage. Wives were expected to look the other way when their husbands committed adultery, hit them, or abuse them. You talk about sacrifice - for what purpose? Why WOULD women choose this lifestyle today?

If you are not stereotyping, why are you call it selfish? Why do you think it is selfish if a girl decides that is not the life she wants? Things have changed and women who felt oppressed in those times have found freedom. So I guess you could say why were men and society so selfish that they felt that they had to force the women who would rather have a different life to the society norms. It really does work both ways.

I do all of those things.
I bake bread and clean house. I care for my family. I sacrifice from love. It's actually quite a pleasure and no sacrifice at all.
It just isn't cool anymore, not trendy.
Priorities change and so does the family/social structure. It's a shame if you ask me.

It all has to do with "girl power" and women's liberation..... I wish sometimes now was like the old days.....Women would get up every morning and make an effort to look nice. The house was always clean, and food was always ready....convenience inventions (the fridge, microwave, stove, etc...) were really appreciated and exciting....The world moved a little slower.....there wasn't so much stress....People were as promiscuous as they are now... STD's weren't infecting 1 in 4 people...in the US alone...the clothes were stylish and tasteful. Kids weren't spoiled rotten hellions....... Yeah....I want to go back.....Hell, I wouldn't even mind riding a horse everywhere either....lol
