Scientifically I'd say it was probably his illustrations of physiology of the human body. His were, for quite a while, the most detailed anatomical studies ever done.

As far as his artwork, I'd say the Mona Lisa simply for it's technique of sfumato which involves carefully layering translucent layers of pigment one on top of the other, in some cases hundreds of times, to get a soft hazy effect. The technique had been used before Da Vinci but, as you can see with the Mona Lisa, his use of it is probably the most masterful.

Engineering wise, probably any of his machines could be chosen. It's true that most of them wouldn't work if they were built as a physical model (his tank being a good example) but the ideas were there. I'm sure someone of his intellect would have had no problem modifying his designs to achieve his idea once he had them prototyped. Then, of course, there's his glider and primitive helicopter.

His greatest accomplishment on the whole though, I would say, were his codices. If he hadn't obsessively written down everything then we may have never known the full extent of his genius.

What was Leonardo Da Vinci's greatest accomplishment?

I think that's a matter of personal opinion. You could say the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, you could say half of his other paintings etc. Personally, I think his inventions, all of them, were his greatest. Da Vinci's anatomical drawings were far ahead of his time and people scoffed at him for it. It was some 300-400 years before his ideas would be imporved upon or even thought of.

As in any life, one of the greatest accomplishments you can achieve is to have your name remembered for all eternity. A person can do many things in life that are personal and known only to ones family, but to be remembered long after you're gone by the entire world is priceless.

Well allot of people say the Mona Lisa but he did better works. The only reason people say the Mona Lisa is because he went around saying it was his greatest work. So we went with that.

1) He had nothing to do with the Sistene(sp?) Chapel

2) He was so multi-faceted, calling any one thing his greatest achievement is kind of difficult
