For me, a long time suffering Cubs fan who attended his first game during the painful 1969 season, it would have to be Glen Beckert. I remember my father telling me that, while he wasn't the most skilled player on the field, he always hustled, kept his head in the game and came to play. Being a kid that was a little on the small side, and who wasn't blessed with a lot of natural ability, I took that to heart, worked very hard, and became a pretty good little ballplayer. I even wore number 18 in high school as a tribute to Beckert, and became a second baseman for that reason as well.

From a Cardinal fan:
I have liked and respected several Cubs during the years, but my favorites would include Jody Davis and most guys who played with the Cubs after they played on the Cardinals (Mike Tyson, Donovan Osborne, John Mabry, Gary Gaetti, etc. etc. - NOT Jason Marquis). I wasn't born or old enough for the Ernie Banks today or more recent Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins (first era), Glen Beckert, Ron Santo era.
After their playing days, I would say Andre Dawson. I had the opportunity to meet him and he was first-class. Didn't like him as a player though only because he was so clutch. I also met Milt Pappas and thought the same.
But I will go with Jody Davis. He always played hard and was a key component of those teams in the 80's. But darn he was slow - who would win a race - Davis, Yadier Molina, or a turtle?

Cubs are my 2nd favorite team after the Indians, so I guess I qualify as a Cubs fan.
Hard to say Banks, Ryno, Grace, Sammy, Prior, ETC.
I know I'm forgetting alot of good players
there are about 80 different ex-cubs I always see on teams and they are still good.

#14 Ernie Banks - Besides the MVPs and HR titles he was a total class act. Not mentioning any names, he didn't quit in the middle of the season and demand so much money they couldn't bring back Maddux. He didn't leave for free agency when things got tough. He didn't cork his bat or take drugs. He took our love and returned it by playing great baseball for twenty years. He once had the MLB record for fielding percentage at SS. His batting titles in a very dead ball era were just as impress as leading the league in any other era.

Ferguson Jenkins. He's Canadian, he has an awesome name, and he actually didn't suck, which is rare for a Cubby.
