x = ( -5 +/- sqrt(25 + 16) / 2
= ( -5 +/- sqrt(41) ) / 2.

By using the Quadratic formula you get ( -5 + sqrt(41) ) / 2 and ( -5 - sqrt(41) ) / 2

x^2-5x-4=0
x=1/2[5+/-sqrt(25+16)]=1/2[5+/-sqrt(41)]. ANS.

a = 1
b = 5
c = -4

x = (-5 +/- sqrt(5^2 - 4 * 1 * -4))/(2 * 1)
x = (-5 +/- sqrt(25 + 16))/2
x = (-5 +/- sqrt(41)) / 2
x = -5/2 +/- sqrt(41)/2

If you have to eliminate the radical, sqrt(41) =~ 6.4
sqrt(41)/2 =~ 3.2

So x = -2.5 + 3.2 or -2.5 - 3.2
x = .7 or -5.7

x = -b +- sqrt(b^2 -4ac) / 2a

x = -5 +- sqrt ( 25 - 4(1)(-4) / 2(1)

x = -5 +-sqrt ( 41) / 2
