You can teach a child many things, but without real consequences or rewards it can often mean very little. We learned this when we potty trained our 2 year old daughter. Efforts to convince her that peeing in her pull-ups (and then her panties) wasn't good went without response. But the first time we offered her M&M's if she would use the potty she potty trained in less than 3 days.
It is similar with respect. First you need to model it. Do you treat your spouse, your neighbors, the people you interact with on a daily basis with respect? Do you treat your children with respect? It is one thing to tell them to respect others, it is another to model the right behavior.
Second, offer rewards and punishment for their behavior. Praise them when they do something respectful, and find a proper punishment for when they show you disrespect. Regarding punishment, different children respond to different punishments. Some respond to time outs and a simple "I am really disappointed in you." That stuff never worked on me, it took a bar of soap in my mouth to make me stop. So find the right type of punishment that will get your point across.
Between modeling proper behavior and enforcing the respect you deserve, you should be able to turn get the respect you desire from your children.

Hey if you figure it out let me know. I've got 5 kids and for the most part they do respect me, but there are those days when it seems like they've totally forgotten who the hell they're talking to. And I'm a single working mom. So If u get the answer.... please pass it along.

Mine is doing the same thing and he's only 6. He's been at his dad's all summer so I think it's no coincidence. I just remember I'd get my butt tore up if I talked to my parents like that!
