How strange for me to find this post, it is still driving me crazy. I had the Paraguard IUD inserted three years ago, one year after the birth of my son, I really didn't worry about getting pregnant with the IUD, I thought that this was the best choice for me. And it was.... until last month. On June 9th, I was out for a walk with my son and I just didn't feel right, and on top of that my period was a late. Oh dear!!! So I purchased a test and it was positive! That evening my doctor's office sent me to the ER because I was unable to locate the strings and she really felt that I should have an ultrasound. Well, I was definitely pregnant, six weeks to be exact. How could this have happened? I mean, I know nothing is 100%, but come on! I could not leave the hospital without having the IUD removed first, so they did remove it. Thank Goodness. Although, the next morning still in shock, I woke up with the worst cramps of my life. It was then that I knew that there was no way that this could be a normal pregnancy. I did not start to actively bleed for approximately one week or so after the removal, but had been passing tissue material (sorry to be so graphic) and clots leading up to the bleeding. It was such a long process, I really thought it would at least be over by that night or the next but it was almost two weeks of hormone hell. One month later I am finally feeling better. But I still cannot stop thinking about the fact that I got pregnant with the IUD and miscarried! I have finally attributed it to the fact that with in the last six months I have lost over twenty pounds, maybe twenty five. I know that this had to have caused the IUD to shift because when I think back I can remember the ultrasound tech saying that it was tilted a bit, to one side. What?!!! Yikes. I really don't know if there is much that could have prevented it anyway, it's not like you can run to the doctor every day to have him check the position of IUD. I do believe though, that women should be made aware that if they are planning on losing weight that it is a possibility that the IUD could shift and no longer be effective. It is exactly what happened to me. Sorry to ramble on!

There is no fool-proof way of preventing pregnancy other than abstinence. All methods of birth control have a failure rate, meaning that you can get pregnant no matter what birth control method you use, no matter how miniscule the failure rate is!!!
An IUD is designed to prevent the fertilized egg from implanting itself in the uterus but as stated previously, there are documented failures in this and every method of birth control. I do not believe that weight loss would have anything to do with improper fitting of the IUD, however when in doubt, check it out. Make an appointment with your doctor and ask the doctor about any concerns you may have, that's what they are there for and get paid to do!!
Good luck!!

You can always get pregnant w/an IUD. They're not 100% effective. But, a few pounds weight gain should not change the way the IUD fits between muscles.

With any birth control there is a risk of getting pregnant. The risk is very low but it is there. If you have the IUD and are worried about getting pregnant, think about using some extra protection. The pill or a condom would be good options.

My mom got pg with me :) using an IUD. Also I just read that among the contraceptive methods, IUD have 98% efficiency, which means there's a 2% chance of getting pg. If you are concerned it'd be better to talk to your OB.

If you can be pregnant or if you have infertility problems I reccomend to follow this method http://pregnancy.toptips.org
Many factors can cause a couple trouble in conceiving a baby, I'll list a few of the most common ones in women:
Anorexia or other dietary dysfunctions
Lacking amounts of FSH and LH are produced, so ovaries aren't as functional as they could be, and so not many eggs are produced
Stress, causing periods to become irregular
Medications such as cancer treatments, antidepressants, hormone therapy, pain killers, and antipsychotic drugs can all cause temporary infertility.
With the method that I posted above you will be able to get pregnant!

Oh yes you can! I myself took my best friend to the hosptail to get one removed when she was 6 weeks pregnant. She had a healthy baby boy, and was on the IUD.

I had an IUD fitted, but never heard of weight loss affecting its ability to ward off pregnancy but if you're overly concerned call the Nurse, im sure she'll know.
