First off let me start with kayejano right above me is right by stating that vast amount of knowledge can be found beyond the history books. I have studied and pondered such idiocracies for many years. There are books outside of school books that would detail and break this topic into tiny morsels of information.

On my second televised round of Jeopardy, Alex Trebeck asked such a similar question. The answer was almost nominal in points, but it was awarded based on the difficulty of the question.

Near Mizar is a star called Alcor that is believed to be an optical companion. Thus creating a mirror image of up to 3 similar stars. Five of the stars of the Big Dipper are at the core of the Ursa Major Moving Group. The two at the ends, Dubhe and Alkaid, are not part of the swarm, and are moving in the opposite direction.

The Big Dipper is derived from African decent just as the slaves themselves. The slaves knew what the Big Dipper was before ever reaching Americas shores. The Dipper had appeared on some tribal flags, and some Africans considered the handle to be three cubs following their mother, while others pictured three hunters tracking rhinoceros.

As African lore has it, late at night, Salongo Gamba, the war cheif of the Burundi tribe was standing facing his beautiful life long companion, Chanecia. Outside, under moonlight, she looked up, and past his nude body, as if she was in deep thought. He asked what must you be thinking, to which she replied, " Isso é uma montanha-russa". Meaning, that is a Big Dipper.

The same way that you know what it looks like; they were taught by somebody else. The big dipper is one of the most distinctive constellations (or part of a constellation) in the sky, and most cultures throughout history (in the northern hemisphere) have recognized those same stars as being part of the same pattern, even if they called it something different.

Those who were slaves were not stupid. Blacks became slaves by being captured and brought to a country that they were not knowledgeable of. It is a shame that the schools do not teach Black (African) history the way they should. In Africa, their were many kings, queens and empires ran by Blacks.
Not only that but Native American history should also be taught in schools. Vast amount of knowledge can be found beyond the history books.
