My 15 yr old son and I just relocted to another State from Hawaii. 5 months now, and my son has managed to get arrested on 2 separate occassions for status offenses. One was for curfew violation and the other, possession of marijuana and a firearm. My son has never been in trouble and has friends that have snuck him out of the house to tag abondoned buildings in the most crime infested areas. Unfortunately, the Juvenile Justice System here has not been of the highest rating Nationwide. There have been reports of child neglect and abuse. As a mother, I know my child can use some behavior modification, but to be locked in a cage is not going to solve this problem. What can a mother suggest to the courts to ensure that her child will not become a menace to society without being locked behind bars?

Sounds like your son got in with the wrong group of kids. The law is pretty harsh when a kid has a weapon. Try asking for community service (working in a senior center or maintenance work in the municipal complex) and that there be a requirement that he keeps his grades up. The teen years are the most difficult for both you and your son. Good Luck.

Before I read that you were the mother, I was going to suggest incarcerating the parent.

States are stiffening the penalties AND possible jail time for guardians of minors.

In addition to whatever the courts do, do you have your son in any kind of counseling? Moving is always traumatic, I'm guessing you're raising him all by himself, and having to leave HAWAII? Just plain rough.

I don't think single moms need husbands, but a good male role model could help - whether it's the counselor, an uncle, a neighbor.
