Car used only for commuting, at posted speeds, and bought the BMW only to satisfy her ego. Do I really need performance tires, and what at are cthe ramifications of using a standard tire to get longer life?

You can switch to other performance tires with mileage warranty. I use Kumho Ecsta ASX on mine, they're rated as Ultra High Performance All Season with threadwear of 420AA.

They're extremely affordable, and I feel I'm not really compromising anything using them.

I paid $89 for my 225/45/ZR17 size. I'm on my 2nd set now. My first set wore down before 30,000 miles (my fault really, bad alignment), Sears let me claim for mileage warranty, got some money back... but I felt nothing beats the value of these tires. So I got another set.

I believe there may be even a rebate deal going on now ($10 back per tire).

Keep the properly rated tires for the car, but go with a harder compound rubber. Go to a tire shop, not a big chain or super store like Wal Mart and steer clear of the dealer. If there tires are wearing evenly and this has nothing to do with an alignment issue or sticking brakes and she doesn't drive like a maniac, it's just the compound is too soft for your roads.

Something a little harder won't perceptibly affect performance and will give you a lot of life compared to 35K miles. Bridgestone Turenzas, Dunlop and Michelin X tried are known to be very quiet. Pirelli 4X tires might still be too soft, then there are Kuhmo and HK tires that will be a little stiffer but will double your current mileage. Good luck.

1. Certified Pre-Owned(CPO) means that it was inspected and has a long warranty on it because it's supposed to be reliable. 2. I'd go with a G35 over a 325 personally. More power and it's just as good in virtually every other category. 3. All your cars are different, try to settle on what you want before you go car shopping. You have an entry level BMW, a mid sized sedan, and a big go kart. 4. Getting a carfax of the car would be wise. 5. If the BMW was in an accident DO NOT buy it.

As the other posters have said, you don't "need" performance tires, you can buy tires with harder compounds for longer life, but they will degrade the car's performance to varying degrees.

However, the 2006+ E90 3-series is equipped with Run Flat Tires (RFT's) and therefore does not come equipped with a spare tire from the factory.

If you buy non-RFT's, just remember to keep a patch kit in the car for the wife, have a membership with AAA, or buy a spare and jack to keep in the car etc., because if she ever gets a flat, she won't be able to put on a spare and drive away otherwise.

Check the tire pressure often. Under inflated tires may give you a cushier ride but will break down the side wall and cause greater wear.
Are you going right down to the wear bar on the tire?
Have you tried different manufacturers?
just a few options
try the attached link. It's for truck tires but I'm sure many of the same factors apply

35K for performance tires is about correct. If you go to lesser tires, you will definitely feel and hear the difference. Lots more road noise, and much poorer handling. The car is tuned to those tires.

Don't feel bad -- there are some performance tires that only get 5K, they are so soft!

All above are right, 35k is about the right milage.
The wear and tear has many factors.
Your tyre pressure must be right,as per manufacturer,s recommendations.
are your shocks absorbers and springs in good conditon.
also tell the tire dealer of the road conditons she is driving.Whether the road is tar, asphalt, concrete or crush run roads.
Hope you have some idea to get proper tyres for her.
Enjoy driving.

differnt tires and for differnt things...go to tire rack and study...."performance" tires have soft tread for better grip so they wear out fast... look at the warrenty...so 40,000 some 60,000.... shop around and ask differnt tire places..you can put on differnt tires [hyway ] tires but change all4 and get exact same size..

if she's just tooling around in it then a less expensive/longer life tire would be fine.
