I can't tell you how many times I've seen people railing against Christians who support the war in Iraq and the death penalty -- they say such Christians are the foulest of hypocrites and repeat the commandment "Thou shalt not kill." Don't these people realize the same God who prohibited murder also prescribed a penalty for those who broke that commandment?

"If a man taketh the life of another man, then by man shall his life be taken." Exodus 21:12, straight out of the Law of Moses

Isn't this a perfect example of the ignorant criticizing that which they don't understand (or don't care to)?

Christians by definition are ignorant of the real world. You can use the Bible to justify virtually anything. Its a contradictory set of old books, nothing more.

Your example goes to show exactly the kind of discrepencies that are prevelant in the Bible. Another being "An eye for an eye" and "turn the other cheek", and the gospel of John being almost completely different from the others.

I dont think it is non-Christians that should be blamed for being "Bible ignorant", it should be the Christians that should ask why they are putting so much stock in a book that was compiled in the 4th Century AD from a massive amount of written work (most of which has now disappeared into the ethos, or labelled as "apocryphal") written mostly by poorly educated people in a time where answers were badly needed and there was no rational expanation to answer them.

It should also be noted that Jesus was never seen as divine at any point until Constantine made it so when introducing, or forcing, Christianity on the Roman Empire to stop fighting over the merged Greco-Roman Gods.

I think people who iconify ignorance are those Christians who believe blindly in the Bible because their parents told them to, who do not look at Chrisitanity in a historical context in relation to the social climate of the time, who stubbornly ignore all the other philosophies out there and wax lyrical about passages from the Bible which have been roughly translated into English and very often confused (look at the "virgin Mary", the literal translation is "the young woman Mary" and has nothing to do with being a Virgin, in fact the immaculate conception is purely a modern Western concept)

Speaking of ignorant, have you read about the Crusades?

The problem is not "Bible-Ignorant" people, but those who cannot justify a Bible carrying Soldier. By your own statements, all our soldiers will be accused (biblically) of murder and lose their life.

Rather than rant against those who are so "Bible Ignorant", perhaps you should find a way to justify your own beliefs and temper that with the tolerance of acceptance of other beliefs in a society where all are equal.

One must realize that "The Bible" was written in a language that was not English. Much meaning is lost in translation. Just like poetry, "The Bible" lends it self to several different meanings. Perhaps reading literally into a book that was meant to be read in a different language can be foolish.

Why is it that all the christians on here post extremely judgmental questions, then when you go to e-mail them an honest response, they never allow e-mail or IM???
Afraid to allow others to express their opinions?

It's not a matter of UNDERSTANDING, it's a matter of believing... & everyone has the right to their own faith & to their interpretation of the bible, torah, koran.. or whatever book they choose.Personally, I worship life, actual life, not some idea of life that someone else articulated then wrote down for others to follow blindly. Following blindly leads to distruction... ie. Hitler... Jim Jones.... David Koresh... etc....etc...etc...

What about the law in the OT that say if a man lays with a women without her permission and is found out he must pay the father in a bag of gold/silver.

Why dont we follow that one too?

Or the one about not being allowed to sit next to a woman who has her period?

"Why are so many people so Bible-ignorant?"

Why are so many people Koran-ignorant?

Or Tripitaka?

I do suspect that Ignorance IS bliss.
