My friend says they grind their teeth and make a purring noise

They do sometimes grind their teeth. Rabbits do not purr. If the rabbit is making a purring type of noise then it probably has some sort of respiratory problem such as a cold. When they breathe through a somewhat mucas filled nose it can sound similar to a purr. Or sometimes it can also sound that way when they have a respiratory problem in their chest. Most rabbit breeders refer to that as "rattling".

Rabbits tooth-purr. Sometimes it sounds like their teeth are chattering or they sometimes make grumbling noises.

I have one rabbit that is extremely vocal when he's being petted. He sounds like Chewbacca from the Star Wars movies.

Yea, my grandfather has a lot of rabbits and I have heard them make some kind of noise.

Thats a stretch. No they cant purr, but if your want to make believe Its possible. I have a fish that purr's.

this is true. my rabbit, Jeremy, grinds his teeth when he is being petted or massaged. it's their way of saying that they are relaxed, happy and content. http://rabbit.org

Yep, that's a "tooth purr." They also "coo", and mumble when content.
