Any person that is interested can pick up a book and read. This is obvious with real artists. There are thousands of libraries and worldly resources that are beyond the classroom. Classroom trains you to work for someone else, free thinking allows you to build your own.
Aside from that you answered your own question: A gift is just that. A gift. And the more you use it, it becomes a well honed craft. Some use it better than others. The others are generally what make it to the radio and TV.
(And note to all: you would be surprised how many performers in the music industry ARE well educated. Don't confuse the images with the people. For some it's an artform, for some it's a job.)

Formal schooling doesn't give artists their gifts; they're born with them. Rappers, as well as other people without formal education, live in the world. They hear other people speak. The world itself is a school. For millions of years, old people taught the younger generation how to do what was necessary to survive. Higher education helps in many careers, but no school ever taught someone how to be an artist. School can teach technique, but so can peers. Look around you. How much have YOU learned outside of school? Once you start to think about it, you'll be amazed.

well thats a stereotype to say rappers dont go to school (lil wayne went to college), the ones who dont learn from teaching themselves...nas dropped out of school in 8th grade and he's arguably the most lyrically gifted rapper of our time...these rappers (the good ones) have a god given talent, you dont necessarily have to be "educated" to be a good rapper, alot of rappers do study the dictionary, the more words you know the better.

simply put they study rap... they read dictionarys to learn words and there meanings. they listen to other rappers pick up slangs and change up verses create new ones and practice, practice, practice whats so hard about learning how to talk, a young child learns words at the age of 1, some of these rappers have been at it since the age of 12 and up its there version of schooling and education known as rapping 101

Some rappers like Nas put themselves through self-education. He dropped out of school but he would read any book he could get his hands on.

Although I am a staunch advocate of education, school does not give you the gift, it cultivates it. One could be a moron regurgitator of answers and do well in school with no gift at all. It sounds as if you are a jealous hater with many prejudices.

Ummm hello. They are just rhymes. Even children recite nursery rhymes.
What makes the rapper so special is his being able to spit rhymes on a beat, not everyone can do that.
But rhyming? A chimp can be taught to rhyme.

A natural talent and gift. It was there purpose in life.
And just because they didn't finish school doesn't mean that they didn't read at home, when noone was looking.
I have to say though, I have been wowed by their vocabulary many times.
