I don't think it comes just down to oil, I do think the US with the biggest most effective navy and one of the biggest commercial shipping economies has national security needs to defend the economy that ships goods through every major part of the world either back to the US or to other countries. We need to know that precious areas like the Mediterranean, Suez Canal and Persian Gulf are well protected for ourselves and other of our allies who use those seaways. Yes oil is a major component but do not think of oil just for energy use it also has uses in so many of aspects of our and others economy. An island nation like Japan which is our key Asian ally is highly dependent on oil and goods coming through for from this area and we must protect them also. I know the other thing people will say if they are prejudiced against Israel is our support of them in the region but they are the only working democracy in the area and give us assistance in intelligence gathering and other economic issues.
I think the biggest thing many people need to do is not just simply this to oh we do it for Israel, for oil, for whatever. All of foreign policy for years is complicated and if you don't think it is more now than 50 years ago requiring us to be more places then you will never learn from history.

There are two main issues in the Middle East that concern us:

1) Oil - because most of the world's oil comes from the Middle East and because we are dependant on oil, we need a steady supply. That means... we need a stable region.

2) Terrorist - a combination of factors have created a situation where independant factions of the reason has made it their business to inflict harm on our country. In the name of national security, it is in our best interests to remove the factions.

If it weren't for both of those issues... nothing would be happending in the middle east. Look at Dafur. One of the only reasons Dafur has even made the news is that an ingredient of Coca Cola comes from Dafur. Otherwise, it would just be like so many faceless African countries committing atroscities.

I don't think America is all that interested. Bush is the one that wants a slice of the Mideast pie.

If you go back to the basics the GHW Bush CIA was always making deals with an Oil clause.

It has to be personal wealth. GHW Bush used Prescott's basic Suck up to the enemy business model on the Saudis. Now Dubya is in lock step with proven family business practices.

Go Team Bush Go

Its all about oil and protecting Israel Rove.

If there was no oil then no one would care about the place.
Just look at Darfur or other places that have brutal dictators.

Its about the control of the oil.

Oil.

It is that simple. If these nations democratically decided to re-nationalise their Oil industries - there would be complete anarchy in America.
