Like many other subjects, there are more of these than most folks know of.
As an example, I've put a link below to one that was quite famous in its time. It is a deliberate hoax perpetrated by none other than Edgar Allen Poe, published originally in 1850 as an article in the 13 April 1844 issue of the New York Sun.

Also, some kids (in Britain I think) confessed that they were responsible for some of the crop circles.

heres one ever hear that the real paul mccartney died in a car accident and the one alive now was so much better than him that they left it like that its got more to it dont remember all the details and the one about the kid from leave it to beaver died in the war hes still alive too
