(+)Positive first and then the (-)Negative. This is the safest way. When you connect the positive first there will be no spark (unless the negative is touching metal), then the negative might make a small spark when you connect it secondly, but it's not at all dangerous to you or your vehicle (unless your standing barefoot in saltwater as you connect it!) And if your car battery is more than 3-4 years old, (ie. your car is 3-4 years old) consider replacing your battery. I had my car taken to the dealership service center because it wouldn't start. They tested the battery, alternator, and cables, but found nothing wrong except that my car wouldn't start. On a whim, I replaced the battery (the battery that they said was okay), and miraculously my car has started and worked flawlessly for over the last year. I hope that this information has been helpful for you.

+ first -second cos if you connect the negative first (to car body) when connecting the live or positive, you might touch the bodywork with ya spanner and then you will have a firework display.

Connect the positive first, that way when you are hooking up the negative if you accidentally bump the wrench on the body it won't spark.
