Yes it's extremly true. Hockey to us is like football, baseball and basketball combined for Americans. Every Canadian has their team and follow them VERY closely. We have rivalries similar to Red Sox and Yankees, like Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, people like me hate the city of Ottawa just because they're our hockey rivals. We take our hockey very seriously.

yes, they most definately are. they are die hard for there team more than most americans and football. i was at a pens game once where they were playing the leafs. there were 2000 leaf fans there so loud and screamed go leafs go the whole time. it was an 8-2 blowout over the leafs, but every fan stayed there to the end of the game, even when some 3000 pens fans had already left because we knew the we had won. the canadians are insane with this is sport and i respect that.

Most Peoples answers have referred to the NHL. those of us in Canada also have major junior and junior "A" leagues that we go to to watch the greatest sport on earth. I went to over 50 games of the Memorial Cup Champion Vancouver Giants last year , as well as at least 40 games of the Burnaby Express, where # 3 chosen in draft Kyle Turris played . if you also include watching NHL on the television , it is easy to see that we are obsessed, as I think there are people doing the same thing across our great nation. no worries on the "offending " anyone , I think we are proud to be thought of as Obsessive about our hockey.

I must be Canadian, b/c I absolutely love the sport! As an American, I'm bred to enjoy football and baseball as the big time sports, but no other sport lights a candle to hockey. I'll argue anybody out of that debate. Think about it....NFL, a fight breaks out (although it's hard with the helmets and such), players get ejected and/or possibly fined. MLB, a brawl breaks out, benches clear, and it happens more often than basketball or football, but still, players get fined, ejected, and you really don't see any big time fist fights that don't get broken up by teammates. NBA....there have been some brawls, and some ejections and hefty fines on top of that. Now, we get to the NHL....a fight breaks out, two grown men are pummeling each other in the face, while players stay on their benches, referees circle them, and wait until they're done. Fans in the stands are cheering, beer spilling, putting their child on their shoulders so they can see....the result? A five minute "time out"! You gotta love it!!!!!!!!!

We aren't all obsessed with hockey, but many of us are. There are degrees of it too. I'm a complete hockey freak but that's just me.
As far as lacrosse being the official national sport, yes it is, but hockey is like the national pasttime.
In Toronto, the 4 seasons are: Off-season, Pre-Season, Regular Season and Post Season :)

Hockey, in Canada, is like football (aka soccer) in Europe...just, apparently, without the hooligans, as it is likely too cold for those types of shenanigans.

It is one of the things that defines the nation as a unique entity around the world and we, the Canadian people, have embraced that uniqueness. Its a national tragedy when our Olympic hockey team doesn't win it all...never mind medal.
