A modern computer has a microprocessor. The main use of the microprocessor is controlling the functions of the device it is used in for purposes of accomplishing specific tasks. Sometimes the tasks are user driven (interactive like a computer or a microwave oven) and sometimes their "hard coded" (like a chip to monitor oil level in your car).

a washmachine has a microprocessor. it weighs each load, regulates water intake, times wash cycles, and i'm sure it does a lot other things too, just can't think of right now. microwave has microprocessors too, it counts the timer, determines strength of microwave... microprocessors are good for issuing relatively lower number of commands regularly. you won't see many microprocessors in some fields like manufacturing, they can't handle the logic and commands required. so factories use plc a lot, and program them with ladder logic, instead of assembly language with microprocessors

The original processor were the size of a small room. They took up space, were cumbersome, and not easily replaced. The microprocessor does many times the work of the old processors and when it crashes, it's easily replaced.
