I just want to know if the shop has to do it, or if its something that is easy, that either me or my boyfriend could do ourselves. The shops want to charge 150 bucks each(transmission and brakes). That seems a bit steep. If I can do it myself, how many bottles for each would I need, and what would I need to do? Are there any websites that may help?

I also know how to change my own oil, so is this as easy as that?

neither of these is very hard to do if you have a bit of automotive know how. the service department at the dealership should be able to provide you with printouts of these procedures. as well as the capacities of the fluids you'll need.

on a side note. i highly DO NOT recommend ever getting your transmission "flushed" as i have never seen any good results from this service and in fact have seen more problems result from it. you do not need a flush, you need a "drain and fill." anywhere you go they will try and pressure you into a flush because they make a whole lot more money off you with a flush. don't do it.

if the car has high miles, say over 100k and the transmission fluid hasn't been changed I wouldn't suggest changing it. there is a good possibility it will cause damage. but if you or your b/f have any experience w/ cars it is a simple job. you have to drop the transmission pan and drain the fluid that way and then just pull on the filter and it will come out. put the new one in the new gasket on the pan, and fill it up, usually 3-5 qts.

Damn 150 each? You can do both yourself for under 75. You need to probably change your brake pads and fluid. Changing your transmission fluid and filter would help a lot too. If you go to this website they give you very informational step by step directions with pictures.

Do a google search on the how to portion if you need it, or get a chilton manual, or something similar. Your owners manual should give you all the fluid info you need. As a previous poster suggestion if over 100k miles and its never been changed i wouldnt try it.
