Most definately an 'extinct' social value.
We have lost traditional 'respect'. Respect in modern society is only given to those who are NOT respectful. My mother's generation called older female members: 'aunty', in social circles. These days, even I myself call my own related aunty by her first name. Although many would view this as a minor social change, it has perhaps contributed to the extent of 'lack of respect' that occurs today.
Twenty years ago neighbours and more generally the community were able to intervene with: for example, children causing trouble because 'elders' had respect, however these days this does not happen. Those who would dare to intervene would most probably again recieve abuse or attack of some form.
Perhaps the next question should be: How do we reinstate respect?

The respect I'm talking about is for my girlfriend, I truely love her and I think that is where the respect comes from. So in this case it definitely isn't a social value, and it isn't so much a relation either, more of an emotion which is so strong it creates respect to ensure the other persons happiness and I suppose to ensure that a lack of respect doesn't arise which may eventually mean the loss of that person, when the need for that person is so strong I guess respect has to be maintained, as does the harmony of something very special.
Am I babbling or making sense?! :S
As in general... respect for a random person walking down the street, I suppose that's a mix of all of the above. Say someone fell over and you respect them by running to their aid to see that they're ok and lend a hand. That could be emotional, or maybe an ingrained feeling of 'having to', so a social value, or a bit of both. I suppose everyone's different.

Definately an endangered social value...unfortunately.
Though I will show respect to others (as was drilled into my head while growing up), I do not impress very easily, and VERY few people have "earn" my respect....
Those that have, are generally older, and have shown a humble, kind heart towards their fellow man. They do not judge, are not selfish, and they actually listen when you talk!

Something you never knew you had untill you realised that someone you know,relation,friend,teacher,co-worker etc.has values that you would like to have.
I can't think of anyone I have particular respect for at the moment, but I respect the memory of the Suffragettes.

I think that it is all of the above.
I am not very good at things so I respect a lot of people. The one thing that I respect most is honesty. Honesty in work, speaking, and treating others.

Respect is a way of life. On this journey called life we choose how to perceive and orientate ourselves to the other, be it people , objects, things, thoughts, etc-respect is allowing that what is outside of ME exist. Without judgment, hostility, just letting it be. I respect you, and this question.
