The thoughts of many is quite mixed and sometimes controversial on the use and effectiveness of castor oil. Many people have taken it, only to find themselves in the hospital, and delivering 12-24 hours later. However, there are dangers associated with castor oil, and the reports you're likely to find are the optimistic ones. If you have reached full term (37 weeks) and it is possible for you to go into labor- there are several things you can do to bring it on that are less painful and harmful to you and your baby.

Castor oil is thought to work by either causing such spasmadic cramps in your intestines (i.e. painful) that the uterus contracts by reflex. It could also work by dehydrating the body and causing labor to onset (castor oil causes nausea, vomiting and severe diarrhea- which can make you pretty sore when it's time to push. And then, some theorize that castor oil causes the body to release prostoglandin- a hormone that ripens the cervix. Your doctor will say it's an unplesant and ineffective way to start labor. Sometimes it works- you have a 4.6% chance of going into labor anyway.

A more effective means- (as long as your water has not broken) that is proven to work it to have sex and allow your husband, boyfriend etc. ejaculate inside of you. This will apply prostoglandin directly to your cervix. Orgasms and nipple stimulation can also produce uterine contractions and kick start labor- and in my opinion are probably more fun than diarrhea. These are only effective when your body is ready (Your doctor says you've started to efface and dilate and labor could happen in 2 weeks or so)

Good luck!

There is a common thought within the normal birth world that, if the baby isn't ready, the baby isn't going to come...
That being said, sometimes, when mothers are full term, a little extra push may help. Castor oil taken internally will cause you to go to the bathroom. All that rumbling in the intestines may cause contractions to start, or it may just cause braxton hicks and cease once you've emptied your bowels. It works on the principle that right now the baby is safe and cozy, so something that may upset the balance will start the complex process of the baby wanting to be born.

Less stressful alternatives include, having intercourse, massage, going up and down a large flight of stairs.

My friend took some. We were pregnant at the same time and she just couldn't wait for the baby to come out. All it did to her was give her HORRIBLE gas cramps. But, on the other hand, my mother-in-law did it 2 times, with her 2nd and 3rd child and it worked with the 3rd. I asked why it didn't work the first time and she said that if the baby is not ready to come out, then he/she is not coming.(I asked her because I was wondering the same thing when I was pregnant.) Sex works great and LOTS of walking. My sister-in-law walked around all day the day before she had her baby. SHe said that when she got home, she was in a lot of pain and about 2 hours later, her water broke and my nephew was born the next day. WHen your baby is ready, he/she will let you know. God bless and I hope you have a healthy baby.

Castor oil to induce labor is an old wives tale. There is no medical evidence to support that ingesting castor oil will start labor. Let nature decide when your baby will be born. If you really are anxious to give birth, it has been proven that nipple stimulation in the last days of pregnancy releases a hormone that may signal your body to start labor.

It doesn't work for everyone. And besides, has anyone ever told you that it can kill the baby. Do a google search for castor oil & get all your information first. It can actually make the baby have really bad gastric & the baby can swallow this & die. I changed my mind after reading about castor oil. Do your research first before doing it, PLEASE for your babies sake.

It does not work. The only way to make your baby get here at a certain point is C-section. Other than that, babies will show up when they want to. I've heard of pregnancies lasting anywhere from 4 hours to 48 hours. They come when it is time.

How funny, you are really in a hurry to have your baby, actually I heard that castor oil is dangerous, and only causes diareaha, sperm has a natural hormone that causes the cervix to rippen naturally. So try that!

NONE. castor oil rarely works on doing anythign but making you sick! this is the worst possible way to try to home-induce labor. it tastes awful and normally will only make you sick; yes for some women it does bring on labor, but not very often. try eating fresh pineapple, sex/masturbation (orgasm helps start uterine contractions), nipple stimulation, walking. google :natural labor induction" and a ton more SAFE home ideas will pop up. good luck!!
