The curious case of the dog in the nighttime (Mark Haddon)
a lightly witty story about an autistic teenager
if you are adventurous enough to try non-fiction, see if they have Carl Sagan's classic book 'The Demon Haunted world: Science as a candle in the dark''
it will change your perceptions about superstition and religion

If you're female....try a Janet Evanovich book. So witty, side splitting humour in places and good plots.
She has series of books, 1 for the money, 2 for the dough and currently just produced the 13th. It's about an american
female bounty hunter (who is BAD at her job) always getting into scrapes, getting shot at, her car destroyed in almost every book. She has a real funny grandma and a cop boyfriend, some days.... and the hots for the male
bounty hunter that CAN do his job. It isn't serious just a dead fun read.
To have look goto http://www.evanovich.com/ then click "Novels", then click the title. Try first "Ten Big Ones" then "Excerpt" and have a read of that. I read the excerpts of some of the other books, which I laughed at when I read them but this one sums the other books up better.
Try Ten Big Ones....even though its not the first
And just looked up the other suggestion of Sarah Strohmeyer and she sounds well fun too

I've just finished The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and would highly recommend it. Don't let the slightly fantastic nature of the story put you off, it almost put me off because I don't normally like that sort of thing, but I really enjoyed it.
The Kite Runner by Khaled ... bugger i cant remember the author ... i'll get back to you ....
Hosseini. Khaled Hosseini. Its hard going at the start but very good.
And any of Jane Austen's are well worth a go, especially Persuasion (imho)

I love Jeffrey Deaver and Patricia Cornwell, they both write series about forensic science. If you want light funny crime drama Sarah Strohand (sp) series about Bubbles Yablonski is really good. There is always Janet Evanovich--she is hilarious, she has a Stephanie Plum series about a girl bounty hunter.
I've almost read the library through... Enjoy.

Among novels, read Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.
Among pop nonfiction books, read The Dark Side of Genius by Donald Spoto (biography of Alfred Hitchcock.)
Either will engage you thoroughly.
