It was a new cartridge, not a refill. I haven't printed that much from it, so I know it's not empty. It's in an HP Photosmart 7660. The 56 color is fine and the Photo 58 works in the socket.

This can happen to cartridges with attached print heads such as HP, Lexmark or Dell. It usually has to do with the print head of the cartridge not having any ink to feed it. This happens because cartridges are kept flat or upside down for weeks or months before being used and the ink settles away from the print head. The easiest remedy is to open the box and stand the cartridge upright for a few minutes before using. Then get a damp paper towel, fold it into quarters and sit the cartridge print head down onto it. Hold the cartridge down to the damp paper towel for three minutes. This will help pull the ink out of the print heads, priming them and getting them ready to print. Finally, install the cartridge into your printer and print a few test pages.

You didn't say what mean by "fail."

If you are experiencing poor print quality, try cleaning the cartridges by using the software (printer assistant). You may also try the cotton swab and alcohol thing on the printhead, too.
Some print jobs appear to use black ink, but really the ink is drawn from the color cartridge. A new 57 only has 17 ml of ink in it, that's less than 6 ml per color, keep that in mind when ruling out low ink as the cause.

If you have an alarm light flashing on the printer, the 57 is not being recognized by the printer. Cotton swab and alcohol, but instead of on the printhead, clean the copper-colored contact strip running up the back of the cartridge.

Going forward, print more regularly. Ink cartridges are not meant to sit around unused. You wouldn't expect to save money on paint by leaving the can open and painting only a little bit on each weekend. Eventually, what you have left (in ink and paint) will be rendered unusable.

Check the bottom of the cartridge and see if ink is blocking the hole on the bottom. If thats not the problem, see if the printer has any utilities for inkjet cleaning. This test if you have it prints a test page to attempt to unclog the cartridge. If that does not work, it could be a bad cartridge or check the hp website.

If you don't use your printer often the print head nozzles can clog up with dried ink, Try running a cartridge cleaning through your printer program. If this dosen't work, use rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and gently clean the print head of the cartridge.

Your cartridge has 2 years of warranty. You can find a date in the cartridge in the format yyyy/mm/dd . If it is within today's date, then call HP 1-800-474-6836 and replace ur cartridge.

Have you tried running a "cleaning & calibration" cycle on it? I have an older model DeskJet and sometimes I have to do this after I haven't printed color for a while.

Might be clocked/blocked... Or maybe the ink is dry (not a common problem with HP) or might just have died due to seeing it all and heavy duty.
