The only fish that could survive in a bowl with out a heater is white cloud minnows. Betta's are not a option because they need a heater. They do sell micro heaters for bowls but you need to make sure you get the right size. Also as others have stated you would have to do 2-3 water changes or more a week since there is no filter. Can you return the bowl and maybe go to walmart and pick up a 10 gallon starter kit for $30? Then you can put some different types in. A heater for that size tank is around $8.
But if you are determined to keep your goldfish it can survive in the bowl for a while until you get a chance to get a larger tank. You will need to do frequent water changes due to the amount of waste a goldfish put out. Also do not overfeed it because it will foul up the water fast.

Your'e right, Goldfish will die in bowls, mostly because Goldfish get about a foot long. The only fish that will even live in a bowl is a Betta, but they will be constantly stressed. Take the kit and Goldfish back to the store and start over. This tank (obviously it doesn't matter what color) would be perfect for a Betta (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9885&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Portal-_-NexTag-_-Fish-_-MiniBow%202.5%20Starter%20Kit%20Color:%20Purple&ref=3665&subref=AA). Do not use the divider like it says you can, that is very limiting to fish, and they will still try to fight each other. If you have any questions, email me at nosoop4u@cox.net.

By the way, corals are saltwater and cannot filter a bowl (somebody posted that they could).

I think you got a bad deal, for not that much more money you could have gotten a small 5 gallon tank.Your goldfish really need 10 gallons to himself,so if you love him and want to keep him go out and get a tank.

Bettas can survive in a bowl with water changes twice a week but really it's not the best place for any fish and they would do better in a heated filtered tank as they are tropical. If you decide to keep your goldfish make sure to research cycling your tank.

You should have researched the type of fish you wanted before you went out at bought it... Now that you have you don't know what to do... Any way gold fish can grow to be very big and if they're placed in small bowls it can stunt their growth and they will die. You should start off with a minimum of 10 gallons for your goldfish with a filter, heater, and an air pump. As it grows, you can upgrade to a 30 gallon and it should be fine for the rest of its life. Next time research before you buy.

fish bowls aren't very good for any fish... but a betta can survive reasonably well in a bowl if the water is changed regularly. What are you going o do with your goldfish? Kudos to you for loking up how to care for a goldfish- too bad the pet store is still selling them in bowls.

maybe you should get a starter tank...but guppies and other small freshwater fish can survive in bowls, its just that you have to constantly clean them, (once a wee is my suggestion) but there is a formula for fresh water fish that helps them get used to their environment, and its called startright.(u can get it at wal-mart) your supposed to put a few drops or so into the water, and it filters out all the stuff that can be harmful to the fish. However, depending upon the size of the bowl, i would suggest that you only get 2 or 3 small fish. Coral can be good filters, but they grow like crazy, and I suggest you get a small tank, if anything to put it in.

never put a goldfish in a bolw but it in a 10gallon tank. if you dont want you "littel fishy" to die fallow these tips. Put in a filter and change the water every 2 weeks with purifed water. put in plants so it can rest and it can have babies. Buy one more fish so it wont be lonely. Buy tabels for fitting ick,deseace,fungus....ect.. feed it from the 3 or 2 times a day and love it.

i wouldnt recommend putting any fish in a un-filtered/ un oxygenated tank but if you are gunna put a fish in there i would only put 1 betta in ithe bowl. goldfish are very dirty so you will have to account for that.

selling people fish bowls for there goldfish should be animal cruelty :-)

good luck with your problem
