As a seller, what forms of payment are most secure and how can I be sure the $ is in hand before the goods are exchanged? As a buyer, is there any way to protect yourself from sending payment and not receiving goods?

When I've listed on Craigslist, I got a bunch of scammers that wanted to pay with a counterfeit check. Finally, I placed a Craigslist ad with information about the item and a link to my Ebay auction. I set up the Ebay auction so immediate payment was required to use the buy-it-now option. That prevents scammers from closing your auction.

If you sell on Ebay, put in the ad that the item will not ship until the funds are verified. That will avoid you getting negative comments for delayed shipment when the funds transfer is in question.

The teller at my bank told me we have tons of counterfeits coming in locally. She said even when the bank holds the funds for 10 or 11 days, the checks can still bounce 3 weeks later. I don't think anyone who wants to pay by check is legit so there's no point in taking them. If someone has a checking account, they also have debit card access and the ability to pay with verified funds in the first place.

On Ebay, established buyer protection policies are in place. You only have to be wary if you're the seller.

hth,
Rhonda.

Craigslist recommends DIRECT PERSONAL CONTACT. Meeting in person and accepting CASH on delivery works nearly every time its tried. That is why there listings are organized by LOCATION.

Deal locally only. Buy and sell with people you can meet face to face and exchange goods for cash.
