Let them moan, these people have all their priorities wrong.I have always made sure that my buildings and contents have been adequately covered by insurance,in 45 years of living in the same home I have, fortunately never had to make a claim. I don't hide my head in the sand and say "It won't or can't happen to me " current events show these silly people that it can.Don't bother with the Spanish holiday, the plasma screen t.v. the new stereo, the late model car. Give any one of these a miss - hey presto, you have your insurance premium. Sorry folks, you should have payed up like sensible people,I have zero sympathy for your moans, why should the government help you out at the taxpayers expense?

I am from rotherham, (i did not get flooded, and i do have insurance) but futher down my road we had a flash flood from the road drains which rose so quick it flowed down the road and flooded about a dozen houses. Councils and the water company know about this and still it happens every time we have bad rain. Also we live near a very small stream, no more than an inch deep ususally. This rose to 2 meters high, bust its bank and this added to the flood. After the 1st lot of bad rain, the street and the house at the bottom of our road flooded, the week later after things had gone down, we were warned of heavy rain again, (when ulley was in danger) and all the residents had to get together and pull the rubbish from the stream as that was the reason it flooded. The people in authority was made aware of this and did nothing, so i was told. A man who lives down the far end who did get flooded was told even though he had insurance he would not be covered as it was "freak" conditions and therefore is looking at over £10,000 and more to make his home livable again. We were not classed as being at risk from flooding, people got flooded because of the drains and the stream, and now because of that, our premiums will go up sky high. I feel so sorry for those without insurance, but i feel sorry for those who did and wont be paid.
Check your policies, and see how you would stand if it happened to you. Check the small print. I hope nothing bad happens to any of you who blame them for not being covered., and wonder how you would cope if it happened to you tonight to find you wont be covered tomorrow. You can only understand what it is like when you go through it, and i hope no one ever does, not even the ones who lack emapthy for these victims.
But thankfully, people are helping and donating to this appeal which hallam fm have set up, and i am proud to say i am from Rotherham. We help others who need it, and thank you to those who have helped already.
Its so easy to say its their own fault, but it has affected people who are on benefits, working folk, OAP's and children and schools. Floods affect everyone, not just the ones with insurance, and even then, it is not always easy to get what you should be paid.
It is not only the ones are who aren't insured who arent covered, its the ones who have been wise and bought insurance but still wont be covered, as it is was put down to a freak of nature etc. What about those?

You sound bitter and begrudging. Yes some people don't get insured cos they're dumb or whatever, but MANY of those flooded were lone pensioners and people on Income Support - you CAN'T get insurance in those circumstances + though it seems like a small cost to you i.e. a pack of fags, a pint, etc, some people GENUINELY can't afford even that. I know it's true cos I've been in that position myself in the past and it stinks big time. They really don't need self-righteous critics undermining them. The genuinely needy MUST be helped; that's what it means to live in a civilised society.

Insurance is all well and good, but for a lot of people it's not a question of 'a couple of pints and a packet of fags', it's the difference between having food on the table.
And none of the people who have insurance will have it next time - as the insurance companies will see the area as high risk - what happens next time?
The vast amounts of money we pay in tax in this country should allow us to help (via grants and loans) the people who have lost everything. How much money have we waisted in Afganistan and Iraq. I'd rather my tax pounds (of which I pay a LOT) went to helping Brits in need, rather than Iraqi's who don't want our help....Where's your community spirit?

I agree with you. The fact that these householders didn't have house insurance is their fault and their fault alone. As Allen B said, they have to take responsibility for their actions, something which I'm sad to say is becoming rarer by the minute in the UK today.

I feel sorry for them too, as for insurance, can they get insured if its known to be in a flood area? If they can't, its not their fault they didn't have insurance, but if an insurance company would insure them, then they were silly not to have got insurance.
