It is the 21st of December 2012. The Mayans were the first to be recognized for a calendar that ends on that date. There has also been research done into other cultures such as certain Chinese groups, Romans and even into the Christain faith that point to the exact same date. I don't know if it is coincidence, but it is a little creepy.
What makes it more creepy is that present day astronomers have figured out that on that day, the sun, the earth and a black hole in the middle of the Milky Way galaxy will all be in perfect alignment (The Mayans apparently were very advanced in the sciences and knew of this event. In fact the Mayan Calendar has proven to be more accurate at tracking time than our Julian calendar we use today). This is a very rare occurence... happens about once every 25,000 years. No one is really sure what effect this could have, but some scientist have hypothesized that this could create a massive and rapid polar shift - meaning the earth would basically spinn out of it's current axis. This has been documented to have happened before, but it is uncertain if a polar shift was a gradual occurence or a rapid one. If there is a rapid shift of the poles, you better hope you are on a distant planet.

Some very interesting answers to this question! But HOW will it happen if it does? I thought we were all going out in 2014 when the giant asteroid crashes into the moon, and that 2012 was like a 'rebirth' for the planet before the big one does for us!
Or could it be much sooner?... They power up the reactor that might get us all sucked into a black hole in March next year!!
Trivia: In one of Live Earth's CO2 propaganda videos a man taking a bath while his home floods is singing 'Five Years' by David Bowie. A song most people won't know, but it's about the end of the world - five years time is 2012 - woooooh! lol

I tried to find out more about the ancient Egyptian calendar ending on 21/12/2012, but it is not easy to find. The ancient Greeks pointed to that date as the end of the Suntalia Aion, (the end of age ) but I don't know where they got this information. The Mayan date is day one of the next Baktun, and I find it curious that the time of the winter solstice of 2012 is 11:11AM....
Other than this who knows....

I don't think that it's going to end in a fire and brimstone death from the skies final judgement sort of way, but I have a feeling that sometime in 2012 people are going to wake up to the fact that our consumer culture is about as meaningful as a fart in a hurricane. People are going to wake up to the spiritual side of things enmasse, and I feverntly hope that the spirituality that they waken to isn't fundamental Christianity.

now quit wasting everyone's time with this stupid issue. The Mayan calendar ends (where the heck did you get 11:11?!) in 2012 - the world does NOT.

Nope! It is the date given when the New World Order is officially and openly in control: After the fake alien invasion and the open establishment of the world government.
Don't worry, be happy...

I doubt it. I would be interested in knowing how this got started, however, because I remember being told 2012 quite a long time ago, but never have heard where the date and time came from.
